II - Cycle of Chemo in progress

Its been three days since the second cycle of chemotherapy has begun.
What the doctor has to say:
Looking at the blood reports, Chandru is recovering in a much better pace than a normal ph+ve leukemia patient does at this stage.

A Bone Marrow Test (http://lymphoma.about.com/od/testsforlymphoma/f/howbonemarrow.htm) would be performed after the completion of II second cycle chemotherapy which would tell the future treatments that would be required  for him to get rid of this dreaded disease.
One & only among those treatment was Bone Marrow Transplant apart from the chemotherapy treatment that was on going.Though the doctor was mentioning about this whenever we had met him, there were many other treatments that our friends, relatives, colleagues suggested us with. Like the stem cell replacements, or a radiotherapy on a single bone marrow and a re-insertion of it. But at this stage of the treatment, it was not clear either for us or for the doctor as to which should be the last option to save Chandru, other than the on going chemotherapy which was very much necessary. Another bone marrow test which would be done after the II cycle had all the answers for it. And so are we, eagerly waiting for it to be done.

It was around 70k odd spent for the cycle-I of chemo, apart from it was the logistics and the house expense that had to be borne. Though we now have a reserve cash for the next two cycles of chemo and house expenses, we still have to gather for rest of the treatment, which would cost nearly 20-25 lacs more as of today.
Please do spread the message among your friends, relatives, colleagues and to as many people as you can.

Back to home after a successful Chemotherapy cycle-1

It was 6 days treatment. Injections given one after the other for 5 days rigorously. It seems the chemo injections kill all the carcinogens and along with it dies all the healthy cells in the blood. Due to this, there would be less of appetite, so was the condition in Chandru's case. Constant denial to eat and have oral liquids. While the injections was doing its job pretty well internally, there was a clear sign of after-affects showing all through his body. Loss of hair being one of the visible sign of this. Anyone who would see him at this juncture of time, would realize how hard it is to undergo the chemotherapy. But i bet, you wouldn't agree to my above statement if you go ahead and have a chat with him on any matter in the world. He is still the same Chandru, who has high spirits, good morale for life and attitude to look towards the future with a unique plan.

Though it was around 2.7 lacs odd money already spent for the hospital charges (including for the initial diagnosis), it was still the initial days that was passing by for a normal cancer treatment which runs upto 2 years with 6 months of intensive treatment. Hence you could probably imagine how much of expenses that could result in. If you still haven't lend your hand to this wonderful person, i request you to do so now, at this moment.

On going process ...

Although the chemotherapy treatment was in progress, there were many other things that has to be planned/acted upon in parallel which needed our concentration.
1. Get updates from the doctor being consulted on a daily basis.
2. Making sure Chandru's spirits are high all the time.
3. Arranging for sources that could fund for his treatment.
4. Pre-planning about the Bone Marrow Transplantation procedure.

So as the first point says, keeping a track of patient's current condition would help us in few ways.
a. We could obtain a better picture on whether the current treatment is actually working  and patients body response to it.
b. Can arrange for blood donors in case the blood/platelet count goes below normal.

Second most important thing is to make sure that the patients mental attitude towards the treatment is positive.
We could actually see this on a high positive side in his case. Right from the day he had realized about the disease and the treatment cost, we never saw him bow is head for any matter. He talks about working from home during the chemotherapy intervals, he talks about repaying all the money to respective contributors, and he even talks about starting up his company soon after his recovery. So this second point is something that we never had to worry about for this case. On the contrary there were many instance when we had to learn about keeping the spirits high in our lives by his behavior all the time.
Well well ..!!  if you haven't met him yet, i would say you really are missing an opportunity to learn something that you never had ..

Day-32 In home sweet home

How Chandrashekhar is feeling today...
Who wouldn't show a sign of recovery once they are in home after a month long struggle in hospital of fighting against the dreaded decease. But his case was a bit more joyous and relieving one, as he was back before the Diwali festival.

Pathology Readings:
Hb (haemoglobin) - 9.5  (Normal 11)
WBC - 1.62 ( Normal 1.0)
Platelets - 2.53 lacs ( Normal 2 lacs)

What the doctor has to say...
Has advised for re-visit to hospital after 5 days for a normal blood test and consultation and ie when we would get an idea as to when is ready for the second cycle of chemotherapy.
